The NCI's 30th Anniversary Flag Reaches Gosport NCI!

Image
Well, the challenge was set by the NCI to its stations to get the special NCI anniversary flag around all 60 watch stations using as many different and varied methods of transport possible! The journey started on the 3rd June at Fleetwood in Lancashire for the 2000 mile journey around the coast to Trinity House on the Thames. Gosport NCI certainly rose to the challenge! The flag was delivered to a reception at the Gosport Submarine Museum by HMS Sultan's  Super Sentinel steam lorry. The flag was welcomed on board the submarine HMS Alliance by Gosport Watchkeepers, Gosport Mayor and Mayoress and representatives of the Kings Harbour Master and Fort Blockhouse. It was then flown at the station before being transferred over to the care of the Needles NCI but hovercraft! The flag was seen off on its journey by Portsmouth's Mayor and Watchkeepers from Gosport NCI. The NCI celebrates its 30th anniversary with a special flag relay.

Image
To mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the NCI, a special flag was created listing every NCI station around the coast. The flag is currently going on a 2000 mile relay where it will visit and be flown at every NCI station. It is currently halfway through its journey having left NCI Lyme Bay on route to NCI Portland Bill.  The flag is on track to reach NCI Gosport by the 22nd of July.

What is the weather in the Solent today?

Image
Knowing the local weather conditions before you set off can make all the difference to the enjoyment of a day on the water.  Have you ever wondered what the actual weather is like at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour, or Bembridge or the Needles for example? Help is at hand! Your local NCI Stations all along the Solent make regular weather broadcasts on VHF Channel 65 throughout the day to give you up to date information about the actual weather near you. Gosport NCI has published a leaflet detailing the times of all the local NCI broadcasts - look out for it at your local NCI station or marina or listen out on VHF Channel 65. A double 'thank you' to our local rescue family colleagues at Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS)

Image
Members of the National Coastwatch Institution station at Gosport recently made two presentations to the Chair of the Gosport And Fareham Inshore Rescue Service, better known to everyone as GAFIRS. Cold Comfort! The first came as a result of the GAFIRS New Years Day swim; three hardy watchkeepers from the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) Gosport station joined hundreds of swimmers for a chilly sponsored dip into the Solent on New Years Day. Although more used to keeping watch over the sea, coasts and other swimmers for those in distress, our watchkeepers bravely launched themselves intothe water and were not at all distressed to raise a substantial amount in personal sponsorship! One part of this was donated to the NCI station, and the other was given to GAFIRS. Heart Felt Thanks! An official ‘Thank You’ certificate was presented by the NCI Gosport Station Manager in recognition of a special training programme run by GAFIRS for the watchkeepers of NCI Gosport. This included F...
